SALT WATER TOUCHING YOUR FEET

To know salt and never met pepper,

That is the feeling when going to Venice and not showing up at Padova city center.  A meager 14 minute train ride from “Stazione Ferroviaria Santa Lucia” in Venice is one of my favorite cities. I fell in love with Padova, yes I know …. again …..   This place is dredged in history, built and burnt, raped and completely destroyed several times in its existence but so much alive today.

“La Folperia” opens in the afternoon

Where the danger is lurking for Venice becoming an open air museum, the city of Padova is bubbling with young life from fresh university students. Being a “Libero Comune” or free city since the 12th century and housing the first dissident University of the world,  this place has always been of the free spirit.

A good way to exchange your free spirit with other like minded people is by taking a spot at the counter of “la Folperia”on Piazza della Frutta. This family-run food-stall is like an open bar ….  oops ….  restaurant. For a drink you have to slide 3 steps to “Bar dei Osei”. Returning with a cold Spumante in your hand you ask advice from Max or Barbara, brother and sister, on what to eat.

Their “NEGOZI” or business was started in the mid seventies by papa “Guido” and mama “Dobrilla”. In a Venetian tradition the water treasures of the lagoon are transformed into delights that will linger on your tongue. Their small tent is tucked away under the armpit of Palazzo della Ragione, this spot is known as “Canton delle busie” best translated as “talking business”.

YAMMIE, FINGERFOOD AT ITS BEST

La Folperia stands out in quality and friendliness, winning the street food contest, Veneto area, of 2013 in Rome. So take your stand and order a dish of octopus or “Fritto Misto” / mixed fries, feel the salt waters of the Lagoon touching your feet and start a conversation with your neighbor,
